Climbers in Eldorado Canyon

History

ACE was founded in 1992 after Eldorado Canyon State Park's head ranger Bob Toll recognized the need for a formal process to manage fixed protection (bolts and pitons) in the park. The organization emerged from controversy in the late 1980s when individual climbers were unilaterally adding, replacing, and moving bolts without community consensus, leading to conflict and some bolts being removed. The park determined that climbing route modifications should require community input rather than individual decisions. ACE was created to maintain a fixed hardware review process where the climbing community could collectively approve or disapprove proposed changes to routes, serving as an advisory body to the park while ensuring broad representation from major climbing organizations.
